“Grief can be the garden of compassion. If you keep your heart open through everything, your pain can become your greatest ally in your life’s search for love and wisdom”
– Rumi
Growing Through Both Pleasure and Pain
Life has many unexpected turns in store for each of us. Sometimes we can enjoy abundance and fulfilment of our dreams and at other times we are facing loss or dissatisfaction. As part of life, we get a share of each side of the spectrum. Even the most skilled, the most talented, the saints and enlightened beings are put in situations that make us tremble, are difficult and hard to take.
So far, we went through the emotions of fear and wonder in our past webinars. This month we will take a closer look at the emotion of sadness and how it can help us to open our hearts and be an instrument for spiritual awakening.
How We Connect With Emotions
Like in the previous workshops of this series we will see how ego mutilates the possible experience of an emotion. Our ego cuts off dimensions of our emotion that it can’t understand or process. In this way it tries to create a coherent picture, but leaves us with a non-contiguous experience, contracting our consciousness.
In Yoga and Tantra, we aim to expand our consciousness to the fullness of every experience, so we experience reality and not our projections on it. The question arises:
“How we can expand our consciousness to encompass a new extended understanding of reality?”
In this workshop we will use specific dynamics of sadness to help us to experience a transformed perception of existence. To experience how the world really is beyond our projections is a sign of the awakening of our heart and that we transcended the influence of the ego.
Sadness and the Flow of Time
Sadness distinctly orients the flow of our attention towards the past: What we experienced, what we did wrong, or what we didn’t dare to do. This can come up in meditation, in which we dwell in the past instead of focusing our attention on the meditation itself. This requires that we transcend time through facilitating the natural flow of time, which goes from the present moment forward and not backwards. It is important that we are not ignoring a tendency to go back to moments in the past, but by doing something way more creative and outside of the box. For this we add a pinch of quantum physics in the picture.
Sadness and Our Inner Space
Every emotion stretches us in a certain direction. In our inner universe exists a system of coordinates with our heart as a centre. Sadness draws us from the more superficial layers inwards, towards our centre. It offers us the gift of depth. We will use this pull to explore our inner space and to move beyond it.
