Uncovering Anger: A Workshop for Inner Transformation
Practicing emotional alchemy in order to transform a state of anger is very similar to the practice of non-violence (ahimsa), which is a very dear practice to yogis. Before we even dare to step on the yoga mat, there is a very important stage of practicing the moral principles in yoga (which non-violence or ahimsa is a part of). This is a fundamental stage in spiritual practice.
The “Anger Detector”
The first step is to activate our “anger detector”. To be able to pinpoint the anger in our being and delimit it.
You might say: “I know when I’m angry!”
Yet, there might be moments when we prefer to turn a blind eye to it, to deny the anger and quickly project it on the being or object that “makes us angry”.
Sometimes our anger simply passes under the radar, because it is below the threshold of what we consider abnormal. Just like, when considering is a situation is violent, it is not enough to consider that it is alright because no one got physically hurt. It is good to go deeper and investigate our intentions, whishes and thoughts.
Through this practice we progressively become aware of more subtle and refined levels of our being – just because we put our attention there – insisting and revisiting these areas of our inner universe.
Below, you can find some practical keys that indicate the presence of anger in the domain of our thoughts and feelings. In this way, we can catch it before it manifests in the physical plane.
How Anger Modulates Our Thoughts and Feelings
- Feeling like a pressure cooker
- Narrowing down of the perspective
- Expectations
- Using judgements as an authorisation for anger
- Repetitive justifying self-talk
Solve et Coagula
The stage of delimiting in our consciousness the range of anger is a form of crystalization. Our consciousness has a certain content, and gradually we will be able to draw the contour of our anger before it fully manifests. We can “put a finger” on it, analogically speaking. The state of anger became “real” for us now. This is called, in the science of alchemy, coagula.
The complementary process to coagula is solve. In the case of anger, we are very sure and very convinced that we understand the situation very well. The fire of anger dries out our flexibility and our point of view becomes very rigid and narrow. It is now extremely concrete, like a piece of rock, and it doesn’t allow us to contemplate multiple levels of our reality and its complex interconnections. In this case, we will largely benefit from dissolving this mental construct. We obtain a dilution that is much more rich than what we had before. New energies enter the system, and we will then become able to manifest empathy, to widen our perspective, to forgive, and to accept the situation that triggered our state of anger…
The “Gift of Anger”
When we notice anger rising, this indicates the place in our being where there still exists ignorance. It points to an aspect we still don’t deeply understand or know how to do – and this provides a precious opportunity to learn.
